Schneider First Major Carrier to Reach 6 Million Zero-Emission Miles with Freightliner eCascadia

Schneider National, Inc. (NYSE: SNDR), a leading provider of multimodal transportation, intermodal, and logistics services, has reached a major milestone as its battery electric vehicle (BEV) fleet has surpassed six million zero-emission miles. This achievement underscores the company’s commitment to sustainability and reducing its environmental footprint.

“Reaching six million zero-emission miles highlights our unwavering focus on sustainability and innovation,” said Schneider President and CEO Mark Rourke. “By embracing electric vehicle technology, we are not only helping the environment but also showcasing the broad service capabilities and flexibility we offer to our customers.”

This milestone represents a reduction of 20 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, which is equivalent to removing more than 2,100 gas-powered cars from the road for one year.

Schneider operates one of North America’s largest BEV fleets, including nearly 100 Freightliner eCascadias from Daimler Truck North America LLC (DTNA). To support this fleet, Schneider has a large charging depot at its Southern California Operations Center in South El Monte. This depot features 16 350 kW dual-corded dispensers, allowing the company to charge up to 32 trucks simultaneously.

“Schneider is an excellent example of the forward-thinking leadership our industry needs,” said David Carson, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing at DTNA. “With over 6 million zero-emission miles, Schneider is paving the way for others, showing what’s possible on the path to zero emissions. At DTNA, we’re committed to supporting this transition alongside pioneers like Schneider.”

Schneider’s BEV Leadership Benefits Customers

Schneider’s commitment to sustainability extends to helping its customers achieve their own environmental goals. The company’s BEV fleet has proven to be a key differentiator for customers seeking more sustainable transportation options. In 2023, Schneider became the first third-party carrier to transport zero-emission shipments for PepsiCo globally, logging over 31,000 zero-emission miles in just a few months.

“PepsiCo is proud to be part of this milestone with Schneider in California. As the first partner to use their electric fleet, we’ve demonstrated the power of collaboration in reducing emissions and working toward a cleaner environment,” said David Allen, Vice President and Chief Sustainability Officer, PepsiCo Foods North America.

Drivers Appreciate the BEV Fleet

Schneider drivers have also praised the electric trucks for their smooth ride, quiet operation, and ease of steering. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with many drivers expressing a preference for electric trucks over diesel.

“Once you drive an electric truck, you won’t want to go back to a diesel,” said Marty Boots, a longtime Schneider driver. “The ride quality and quietness make a huge difference in our daily operations.”
