China Eastern Airlines Attracts Strong Interest for Sustainable Aviation Practices at International Forum on Global Ecological Civilization Construction

China Eastern Airlines Showcases Sustainable Aviation Progress at Global Ecological Civilization Forum in Yunnan

China Eastern Airlines (CEAir), one of China’s leading carriers, recently drew significant attention for its sustainability initiatives at the 2026 Erhai Forum on Global Ecological Civilization Construction, held in Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China’s Yunnan Province. The high-profile international forum served as a platform for dialogue on environmental protection, green development, and ecological modernization, bringing together policymakers, academics, business leaders, youth representatives, and media professionals from China and abroad.

The forum hosted more than 260 participants, reflecting its growing influence as a global discussion space on ecological civilization and sustainable development. Against this backdrop, China Eastern Airlines used the opportunity to highlight its ongoing transformation toward greener aviation operations and its broader commitment to integrating sustainability into its long-term corporate strategy.

Strengthening Green Aviation Through Strategic Integration

During the forum, China Eastern Airlines delivered a thematic presentation titled “Painting an Ecological Landscape with Green Flight Trails,” outlining how environmental responsibility has been embedded across its operational and strategic framework. The airline emphasized that sustainability is no longer treated as a standalone initiative, but rather as a core component of its corporate development model.

CEAir noted that it has aligned its business practices with national green development goals, focusing on reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, and accelerating the adoption of cleaner aviation technologies. This integrated approach spans fleet modernization, operational efficiency improvements, passenger service innovation, and ecosystem conservation efforts.

Expanding the Use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel

One of the most notable highlights of China Eastern Airlines’ sustainability progress is its increasing use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). In 2025 alone, the airline consumed more than 10,000 tonnes of SAF, marking a significant step forward in its efforts to decarbonize air travel.

Sustainable aviation fuel is widely recognized as one of the most effective short- to medium-term solutions for reducing emissions in the aviation sector, particularly for long-haul operations where electrification remains technologically challenging. According to CEAir, the volume of SAF used in 2025 contributed to a substantial reduction in carbon emissions, equivalent to the absorption capacity of approximately 2.4 million trees.

This milestone reflects both the airline’s commitment to cleaner fuel alternatives and the gradual expansion of SAF supply chains in China’s aviation ecosystem. It also signals growing industry momentum toward low-carbon aviation pathways, as airlines increasingly seek to balance rising passenger demand with environmental responsibility.

Fleet Modernization and Operational Efficiency Gains

In addition to fuel-related initiatives, China Eastern Airlines has been actively upgrading its fleet and optimizing operational efficiency to reduce emissions. The airline has undertaken the retirement of older, less fuel-efficient aircraft while introducing newer, more energy-efficient models into its fleet.

Alongside these changes, CEAir has deployed 21 new-energy specialized ground support vehicles, further reducing emissions generated during airport operations. These vehicles play a crucial role in minimizing the environmental impact of aircraft handling activities such as baggage transport, refueling support, and maintenance logistics.

Through these combined efforts, the airline reported a 5.4 percent reduction in carbon emissions per unit of traffic in 2025. This metric reflects improved efficiency across both airborne and ground operations and highlights the impact of continuous modernization efforts on overall environmental performance.

Sustainable Passenger Experience and Waste Reduction

China Eastern Airlines has also extended its sustainability strategy into passenger-facing services, incorporating green practices into the in-flight experience and broader customer ecosystem.

One key initiative is the airline’s “Light Fly” on-demand meal service, which allows passengers to pre-select meals based on preference and demand. This system helps reduce unnecessary food preparation and significantly minimizes onboard food waste, a major contributor to airline operational inefficiency and environmental impact.

Beyond meal services, CEAir has introduced sustainability-themed flights and created dedicated digital content sections across its official website, mobile application, and WeChat mini-program. These platforms are designed to educate and encourage passengers to adopt more environmentally responsible travel habits, including carbon-conscious decision-making and waste reduction during flights.

The airline has also made substantial progress in replacing single-use onboard items. A total of 53 categories of in-flight products have been replaced with biodegradable alternatives, including eco-friendly meal packaging. According to the airline, each tonne of biodegradable boxes used can reduce carbon emissions by up to 15.6 tonnes, reinforcing the environmental value of materials innovation in aviation services.

In addition, CEAir has introduced lightweight service trolleys across its fleet. These modifications, while seemingly small in scale, have collectively reduced aircraft weight by more than 1.6 tonnes. Weight reduction is a key factor in aviation efficiency, as lighter aircraft consume less fuel, resulting in lower emissions over time.

Biodiversity Protection and Environmental Education Initiatives

China Eastern Airlines’ sustainability strategy extends beyond emissions reduction and operational efficiency to include biodiversity conservation and environmental awareness.

The airline operates a specialized live-animal transport system designed to ensure the safe and humane movement of animals across domestic and international routes. This system complies with strict international standards and has been used to complete multiple cross-border animal transport missions.

In addition to logistical capabilities, CEAir has developed thematic “biodiversity flights” that transform air travel into a platform for environmental education. One such initiative includes special flights focused on the conservation of black-headed gulls at Dianchi Lake in Kunming, Yunnan Province. These flights are designed to raise awareness among passengers about local ecosystems and conservation challenges.

By integrating ecological storytelling into the passenger experience, the airline aims to foster a deeper understanding of biodiversity protection while promoting public engagement with environmental issues. These efforts position aircraft cabins not only as transportation spaces but also as mobile platforms for science communication and ecological awareness.

Contributing to China’s Broader Green Development Agenda

China Eastern Airlines’ sustainability initiatives align closely with China’s broader national strategy for ecological civilization construction and carbon reduction. The aviation sector, as a high-emission industry, plays a critical role in achieving long-term climate goals, and airlines are increasingly expected to adopt measurable and transparent environmental practices.

Through investments in sustainable aviation fuel, fleet modernization, waste reduction, and environmental education, CEAir is positioning itself as an active participant in the industry’s green transformation. Its participation in the Erhai Forum underscores the growing importance of collaboration between airlines, governments, and research institutions in addressing climate and ecological challenges.

China Eastern Airlines’ presentation at the 2026 Erhai Forum highlights the company’s expanding commitment to sustainable aviation and ecological responsibility. From increased SAF usage and fleet upgrades to innovative passenger services and biodiversity initiatives, the airline is advancing a multi-dimensional approach to reducing its environmental footprint.

As global aviation continues to face pressure to decarbonize, CEAir’s efforts reflect a broader industry shift toward sustainability-driven operations. The initiatives showcased at the forum demonstrate how airlines can integrate environmental considerations into both core business strategy and customer experience, contributing to a more sustainable future for global air transport.
